Understand the boundary
The Academy’s ceremony records give American Beauty (2000), Gladiator (2001), A Beautiful Mind (2002), Chicago (2003) and The Return of the King (2004). American Beauty’s 1999 release is not a reason to exclude its 2000 ceremony win. A nomination or a win in another category is insufficient.

Choose an answer for your goal
Create a two-column recall list: ceremony year on one side, winning title on the other. American Beauty earns 75 fixed points and Chicago 70 in this set. The short alias Return of the King is accepted for the full Lord of the Rings title. Points are our editorial values, not ratings from the Academy.
Worked examples — reveals answers
- American Beauty · Accepted
- Best Picture at the 2000 ceremony, which falls inside the range even though its release year was 1999.
- Return of the King · Accepted
- Accepted short title for the 2004 Best Picture winner. The final ceremony year is included.
- The Pianist · Outside this set
- Nominated for Best Picture in 2003, when Chicago won that category. Its other wins do not satisfy this rule.
Practice the distinction
Check American Beauty and The Pianist. Explain the result using ceremony year and category, rather than release year or the fact that a film won some Oscars. Then recall a second winner without reopening the answer list.

Start with the full category, then apply the exact boundary: Ceremony year, not film release year. Five winners fit; a nomination alone does not count. You only need one qualifying answer. A longer name is not automatically rarer.

Question quality signals
These measurements cover completed daily rounds recorded with timing and rejection details. Older rounds without those fields are excluded. At least 20 measured rounds are required per question.
This question has fewer than 20 measured rounds.
Review thresholds: below 20% accepted, at least 40% timed out, or at least 30% of rounds with an unlisted input. These flags suggest checking the wording and answer coverage; they do not prove an answer is wrong or change points automatically. Abandoned rounds and practice attempts are not included.
