NATO Codewords: Spellings and Accepted Aliases

Understand why an accepted input can have a different length from the official codeword it represents.

Start with the standard spelling

The NATO alphabet uses Alfa and Juliett. Our checker explicitly accepts Alpha and Juliet as aliases, along with Xray for X-ray and Whisky for Whiskey. These conveniences belong to Krillionio’s prepared answer list. Other validators may handle them differently.

A bare A or J is not accepted in our codeword questions. The task asks for the word used to communicate the letter, so knowing the letter alone does not meet the input rule.

Count the answer, not the keystrokes

The four-letter question first selects canonical codewords using their official spellings. Alfa therefore qualifies. Submitting Alpha resolves to that same qualifying answer; it does not create a five-letter member. The five-letter question excludes Alfa even if you type the five-character alias.

X-ray contains four letters when its hyphen is ignored. Xray is an accepted spelling of that answer. Bravo has five letters and fails the four-letter question even though it is a valid NATO word. A failed subset check is different from a misspelling.

Try the boundary yourself

Open the four-letter question and predict the result for Alpha, Xray and Bravo before checking them. Then open the broad alphabet question and repeat Bravo. You have changed the selected question, not the spelling, and the result should change.

For a timed drill, learn two canonical names from the same subset. Lima and Papa both fit the four-letter question and earn 90 and 84 fixed points respectively. These ratings help choose a practice target; they do not measure actual radio usage or player frequency.
