One Answer, Several Spellings: How to Use Aliases
Find the questions that accept a name, distinguish an alias from another answer and verify a shorter input before using it in a dive.
Start with an answer you already know
The question search finds words in question titles and rules. The Answers & aliases tab works in the other direction: enter a name such as Czech Republic to find published questions whose prepared answer lists include it. You choose when to submit the search because its results reveal accepted names and fixed scores.
A result is tied to a particular question. Czech Republic resolves to Czechia in the EU set, but a result in one country list does not guarantee membership in every regional or historical list. Read the rule shown beside the match before opening its checker.
An alias preserves identity and points
In the first-30-elements question, Sc and Scandium refer to one canonical answer worth 96 points. In the Danube-capitals question, Beograd and Belgrade identify the same 75-point answer. Shorter typing does not earn extra points; it simply gives you another accepted form for the same entry.
This also matters in Battle. Two players choosing different spellings of the same canonical answer still cancel each other out. To prepare a backup, learn a different eligible answer, not just an alternate spelling of your first choice.
Normalization is not a missing-answer guarantee
The validator normalizes case, accents and punctuation, then matches against the selected list. It does not accept every plausible abbreviation or resolve a new factual dispute while the timer runs. The displayed aliases tell you which additional forms have been deliberately included.
A partial reverse-search match helps discover a question; it is not itself an accepted input. Searching a prefix can find several names. Submit the full name or listed alias to Answer Lab to confirm the exact spelling and see the result.
Run a three-check drill
First, find a question by an answer you remember. Second, check its canonical name and one listed alias and compare their points. Third, check a different eligible answer and explain why it is a distinct backup. Repeat without looking before trying the timed version.
If a reasonable spelling is missing, inspect the source and report it through the checker with the exact question selected. A missing search result alone is not evidence that an answer is factually wrong or that the original Krillion game would reject it.
